May and Colban Ensure Defeat With Honour for Purbrook

On the Bank Holiday Monday Purbrook took on Andover in a 40 over match at Purbrook Heath. This was the return leg of the match played at Andover on the May Day Bank Holiday.

In that match an inexperienced Purbrook side was heavily defeated. This time a stronger Purbrook XI put up a good fight.

Andover batted first and C.Jackson (51) and A.Cheyne (39) set off briskly. After Jackson had retired and Cheyne dismissed, Purbrook applied the brakes and limited Andover to 155 for 2 off their 40 overs.

The most impressive bowlers were Matt Colban (7-2-15-0), Jared Carter (8-2-31-0), Aaron Dean (4-1-7-0), and Carl Marsh (4-1-6-0).

Purbrook set off as if they had a plane to catch and Matt Colban rattled up 44 in 30-odd balls before being stumped.

After his departure, progress got harder for Purbrook as the run-rate slowed and wickets steadily fell. Will Sage (10) battled bravely. The rock, however, was Jack May who kept his head and anchored the innings to reach 40 before being dismissed in the penultimate over.

This allowed Purbrook to get within 27 runs of victory before the final wicket fell in the 40th over.

Very respectable.

Purbrook: Matt Colban, Jared Carter, Carl Marsh, Aaron Dean, Jack May, Will Sage, Chris Harrison, Charlie Jackson, Mark Higginbottom, Michael Russell, Jack Hamson.
